Is social media more damaging than beneficial?

Social media. We have all heard of it and most likely used it. How often have you found yourself awake at 2 in the morning, scrolling through Instagram? How often do you search for someone’s profile or even scrutinise them? This is a horrible thing to do, but most people will have done it at a point.

Sure, social media can help to find old friends and rekindle relationships or show you new recipes that are your favourite foods. It can help with online shopping and show trends for you to participate in, but have you ever considered how dangerous and damaging social media is?

Body image and eating within social media.

Body image is a huge thing when it comes to social media. Kids grow up with ‘TikTok’ and ‘Instagram’ nowadays, and each day they see photoshopped pictures of models with the ‘perfect body’ and feel like these are expectations they need to live up to. This isn’t healthy for their growth mindset and character growth!

When you were younger, what were you doing? Playing with play dough? Barbies? Kids now don’t get the chance to; it’s fewer brats and barbies, more youtube and TikTok. Suppose social media will continue the way it’s been going recently. In that case, we need to fix the mindset of it before we set unrealistic, unhealthy expectations for kids growing up.

‘Not just kids, teenagers and adults too! Social media is the starting cause of many eating disorders in many different instances; age doesn’t matter. Social media is the cause of bullying of body image, and when people see others with a dream body,’ it can cause issues too. ‘Social media is the starting cause of many eating disorders in many different instances; age doesn’t matter. It is a fact that the more participants use social media, the more likely they are to have an increased appetite or intention to eat, which can lead to binge eating or starving themselves. Eating issues are becoming more significant daily due to social media, which needs to be brought to more people’s attention!

Bullying through platforms!

‘Bullying has increased through the years as media has also increased. Cyberbullying. It is a real and serious thing. Wither it’s a nasty comment on an Instagram post, humiliating someone on a”story’, or even just sending someone a horrible message. Any way of making someone upset or feel bad about themselves through social media is bullying that needs to be stopped. ‘Bullying has increased through the years as media has also increased. Dangerous trends!

‘Platforms like”Tiktok’ are especially bad for this, promoting dangerous trends and making kids believe they are okay to participate in when they are unsafe. For instance, a few months ago, many kids thought it was okay to complete dangerous actions to act like a fairy when these are unsafe. For example, a few months ago, many kids thought completing complex steps to act like a fairy was okay when these are unsafe. ‘Platforms like ‘Tiktok’ are awful for this, but promoting dangerous trends and making kids believe they are okay to participate in when they are not safe.

It is a dangerous place that needs to be taken away from children, and we need to do something before it takes over their lives and mental and physical health even more than it already has.
